The La Mesa Chamber had their own Star Wars moment last week, as businesses and local folks responded to the call for support for the Chamber-hosted Annual Senior Project. Our preview may have not brought in millions of dollars by people purchasing tickets to the movie, but we had our own local “sold out” show, as 24 seniors received support and gifts. The La Mesa Chamber commits $1,000 each year to this worthy cause. These funds allow for the purchase of needed items for our seniors, as well as the special hot turkey meal, complete with all of the trimmings, purchased from Marie Callender’s that is delivered with all of the gifts. This year our Senior Project received many items, cash and gift cards from our local folks and businesses, as well as the public. Due to that support, we were able to fill and pack 24 huge gift baskets, as well as a large cloth bag from EDCO and SDG&E making the total items given this year: Large gift basket, over 50 items, EDCO cloth bag, over 40 items and large SDG&E cloth bag, over 25 items allowing each senior to receive (3) huge packages with their turkey dinner delivery.

We want to thank Carl Burger Dodge Chrysler Jeep RAM World for providing the vans to pick up the items to transport to the police department and the people to help with that task. Thank you Kyle Nyswonger for your generous support and allowing your team members, Pablo Tapia and David Benabides to pack and carry everything, along with Chamber staff to the station.

The seniors received toiletries, canned food, soups, crackers, breakfast bars, cups of fruit and applesauce, socks, hats, dish towels, blankets, key chains, night lights, books, cereals, snacks, soaps, lotions, tooth pastes, tooth brushes, tissues, boxes of food items, cash from several businesses, gift cards from the Chamber and more! These items were lovingly delivered on December 18th by volunteers, along with a hot turkey dinner with all the trimmings, purchased by the Chamber to complete this holiday tradition. Events like these make our community strong and provide a special memory for our La Mesa seniors who do not ask for much and accept all they are given with a grateful heart.
